Ross has been involved in frontline (and I mean frontline) evangelism and missions for over 30 years, 17 of which were spent pioneering Youth With A Mission in the Philippines and other parts of Asia and the Pacific region. This book is not the reflection of a former missionary, but a guideline of how to witness for Christ in an effective manner.
One of the unique features of "We Cannot But Tell" is its broad scope. While books available on the topic of evangelism are legion, and dozens more cover cross-cultural missions subjects at various depths, there has been a dearth of books that combine the two. "We Cannot But Tell" touches both topics, covering practical evangelism from A to Z from a cross-cultural perspective. Ross hits all the basics; the attitude and motivation of the Christian in evangelism, the place of prayer in evangelism, what the real Gospel message contains and how to share it, apologetics, how to get into a conversation about God, how to give your testimony, how to lead someone to Christ, and how to follow-up and instruct new converts. Ross, however, doesn't give these practices in a "step 1,2, 3, BINGO" method, but provides scriptural backing as well as challenging teaching in each of these areas - all within the context of being Spirit-led instead of using a formula. He believes there is a right way and a wrong way to witness and writes: "Sometimes people have not responded to my message because I used the wrong approach. It wasn't what I said but how I said it. Unfortunately, because of past attitudes of "defending the truth" I turned people from the One I wanted them to know! I have come to the conclusion we have to represent Christ's goodness to be credible in the world's eyes. Otherwise they will tune us out...outsiders usually see God more readily by our genuine love and concern than by spelling out our beliefs" (page 25). The most exciting aspect of "We Cannot But Tell" is its cross-cultural emphasis. In addition to evangelizing among Westerners, Ross also applies his material to reaching Hindus, Muslims and other non-Western peoples using challenging cross-cultural examples. The book even contains a section detailing the difference between how Westerners and non-Westerners think. This information is especially helpful for those who live in cosmopolitan cities and rub shoulders every day with people of all races, religions and nationalities (as well as missionaries, those going on short-term overseas outreaches. I found it refreshing to read a practical book on evangelism which took into consideration that witnessing experiences may be more varied than sharing with the average American in a supermarket check-out line. Ross even encourages us to be able to communicate the gospel to those who are non-confrontational and gives examples of how Jesus did that.
