Don Piper recounts the dramatic story of his ninety-minute journey to heaven. When a truck crushed his Ford Escort in a head-on collision, he was declared dead on scene. But a passing minister sensed that God wanted him to pray, so he reached through the wreckage to clasp Piper's bloody hand while he did so. Piper's incredulous voice speaks of what he believes he saw: heaven's luminous gates through which he could see streets paved with gold, as well as relatives and loved ones who surrounded him yet wouldn't let him pass through because it wasn't his time.ADD TO CART
The hilarious, sparkling and endearing diaries of a thirty something Christian, Theodora Llewellyn.
"The Living Reminder was like a visit form a friend I needed to speak with. The surprise for me was how much I needed to hear him say familiar things."
New Review of Books and Religion
"The universal attraction of Henri Nouwen's thought is its stress on the deeps and reaches of the mystery of God-that brooding presence of compassion and grace in the midst of our human situation by whom the wounds are healed, the sick are made whole again, the lost are found, and the prisoners are set free....We...read Nouwen...to discover the new possibilities in our own faith."
The author shares ideas about personal integration with uncommon eloquence and a deep understanding of the human condition. Our true identity is in our moment-to-moment experiences rather than in our past or future. Concern about anything but the present is an unhealthy identification with the mind that can only cause pain and an illusion of control. Being totally aware of ourselves in each moment actually requires little effort or direction if we stop our thoughts long enough to find the pure consciousness that exists in the gaps between them. These ideas will be radical for most Westerners, but they are so smoothly elucidated that almost all seekers of inner truth will find something of value in the program.ADD TO CART
Starred Review. Some failures lead to phenomenal successes, and this American nurse's unsuccessful attempt to climb K2, the world's second tallest mountain, is one of them. Dangerously ill when he finished his climb in 1993, Mortenson was sheltered for seven weeks by the small Pakistani village of Korphe; in return, he promised to build the impoverished town's first school, a project that grew into the Central Asia Institute, which has since constructed more than 50 schools across rural Pakistan and Afghanistan. Coauthor Relin recounts Mortenson's efforts in fascinating detail, presenting compelling portraits of the village elders, con artists, philanthropists, mujahideen, Taliban officials, ambitious school girls and upright Muslims Mortenson met along the way. As the book moves into the post-9/11 world, Mortenson and Relin argue that the United States must fight Islamic extremism in the region through collaborative efforts to alleviate poverty and improve access to education, especially for girls. Captivating and suspenseful, with engrossing accounts of both hostilities and unlikely friendships, this book will win many readers' hearts.ADD TO CART

Catechism of the Catholic Church is the first new edition of the catechism in 400 years. Catechism means "instruction," and this text will remain the standard reference for Catholics for many future generations. It is the authoritative summary of Catholic belief regarding the Church creeds, sacraments, commandments, and prayers. To get some idea of the level of detail with which the Catechism engages Catholic doctrine, consider that 17 pages of explanation accompany the opening words of the Apostle's Creed ("I Believe in God the Father"). The book is exceptionally well organized, with line-by-line explanations of every conceivable aspect of orthodox Catholic belief. Extensive cross-referencing, indexing, footnotes, and "In Brief" summaries of each section further ease the project of finding the precise answers to any questions a reader might have. Even the layout of information on the page is easy on the eyes, with wide margins for readers who wish to make notes. Furthermore, the back cover features a true rarity in the annals of world literature: a blurb by the Pope. --Michael Joseph Gross

Have you ever wondered why we Christians do what we do for church every Sunday morning? Why do we "dress up" for church? Why does the pastor preach a sermon each week? Why do we have pews, steeples, choirs, and seminaries? This volume reveals the startling truth: most of what Christians do in present-day churches is not rooted in the New Testament, but in pagan culture and rituals developed long after the death of the apostles. Coauthors Frank Viola and George Barna support their thesis with compelling historical evidence in the first-ever book to document the full story of modern Christian church practices.ADD TO CART

Set in the South Carolina Sea Islands, Nicole Seitz's second novel follows the stories of two sisters. One is seeking to recreate her life yet again and learns to truly live from a group of Gullah nannies she meets on the island. The other thinks she's got it all together until her sister's imminent death from cancer causes her to re-examine her own life and seek the healing and rebirth her troubled sister managed to find on St. Anne's Island.
"This is another thing I know for a fact: a woman can't be an island, not really. No, it's the touching we do in other people's lives that matters when all is said and done. The silly things we do for ourselves--shiny new cars and jobs and money--they don't mean a hill of beans. Honor taught me that. My soul sisters on this island taught me that. And this is the story of true sisterhood. It's the story of Honor, come and gone, and how one flawed woman worked miracles in this mixed-up world."
Surely there's more than one way to get to heaven? Bestselling author Andy Stanley addresses this popular belief held even among Christians. Bestselling author Jerry Jenkins blends his acclaimed fiction-writing skills into a heartfelt discussion on how to trust God's will in times of suffering. In Though None Go with Me, Jenkins introduces Elisabeth Grace LeRoy, a woman whose faith is tested time and again. He opens with 45-year-old Grace answering her phone at midnight, only to be told that her son is still alive but trapped inside a wrecked car. Like many Christians, she finds herself questioning God. "She had thought she understood grace, had told herself she understood sovereignty. But unless He spared her son ... she feared there was something about God she still didn't understand--and didn't like."
As is typical of Jenkins, Though None Go with Me is a smooth narrative--unencumbered by extensive character development or numerous subplots--in short, a family saga that could easily be a one-night page-turner. Readers will certainly find themselves invested in this spiritually complex and highly likable heroine who somehow keeps her trust in God through the ultimate human struggles, including a shattered romance and the near death of her son. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
Omartian, who has dominated Christian bestseller lists with The Power of a Praying Wife, is back with a companion volume for hubbies. She urges every husband to pray for his wife for her emotions, her skills as a mother, her ability to be faithful, her friendships, her sexuality. Along the way, Omartian offers insights about prayer that even non-husbands will benefit from when we pray with bitterness or hardness of heart, for example, those prayers will not be answered. For those lacking in creativity, Omartian provides, at the end of each chapter, actual prayers for husbands to say. And for those worried about taking husbandly advice from a woman, Omartian has sprinkled the book with the occasional paragraph by her husband, Michael Omartian, and a few other husbands. The book is not flawless; many of the chapters open with an analogy, and some of those analogies are obvious, stereotypically masculine and a tad degrading: your marriage is like a football game, your wife is like a car. This book accepts as a given certain notions about marriage and women's roles that may alienate feminist husbands and wives men should pray for their wives' submission and obedience; working mothers need a set of prayers specially tailored to the guilt they're bound to feel. But for Christians of the Promise Keepers stripe, Omartian has provided an accessible, direct book on prayer. (July) Forecast: The Power of a Praying Wife and The Power of a Praying Parent have sold just over two million copies combined; the former title has occupied the #1 spot on the Christian bestseller list for 19 consecutive months. Since it is directed at a male audience (and women are the primary buyers in the CBA), this title may not sell as furiously as its predecessors, though it will still perform well. Women may purchase the title as a gift book though it remains to be seen whether their husbands will actually read it.ADD TO CART
In some Christian denominations the intellectual life is looked at askance; anything beyond basic literacy is regarded as presumptuous. Sire (lecturer, InterVarsity Christian Fellowship; The Universe Next Door) argues that the intellectual lifeDa life of thinking and thinking wellDcan be a calling for some. Indeed, it is, to a certain extent, a calling for all Christians. "Thinking," he notes, "is integral to our call to be what God wants us to be." The author does a fine job of defending and promoting a Christian intellectual life, one that "does the truth." And the truth for Sire is that revealed in Jesus Christ. Writing in the tradition of John Henry Newman, to whom he devotes a chapter, and A.D. Sertillanges, the author defines the habits required of the Christian intellectual. Recommended for seminary and larger public libraries.ADD TO CART
The Return of the Prodigal Son: A Story of Homecoming is a spiritual adventure story. A chance encounter with a poster depicting a detail of Rembrandt's The Return of the Prodigal Son set in motion a chain of events that enabled Nouwen to redefine and claim his vocation late in his life. In this book, which interweaves elements of art history, memoir, Midrash, and self-help, Nouwen brings the parable to life with empathic analyses of each character. Nouwen's absorption in the story (and the painting) is so complete that the father's challenge to love the son, and the son's challenge to receive that love, become Nouwen's own. And Nouwen's writing is so clear and his tone is so appealingly frank and humble that readers--no matter how far from home--will find hope for themselves in the prodigal peace Nouwen ultimately achieves. --Michael Joseph Gross
The beloved spiritual writer meditates on the parable of the prodigal son's return -- a powerful drama of fatherhood, filial duty, rivalry, and anger between brothers -- and its enduring lessons for Christianity.

This book is an indepth look at how Satan attacks us as women and the process of how these lies then can rule our lives. It is a good read on your own, but a great book to do as a group. I have really enjoyed this study and would highly recommend it for someone who is looking for a deeper study and willing to look honestly at themselves. She does not sugar coat the truths and so it might be unenjoyable for someone who would rather a study with a gentler approach.ADD TO CART
Oftentimes, we think stories are for children. But using the Bible as evidence, we see that God communicated His truth to men and women of all cultures, time, and places by way of many small stories forming one large story.
While possessing a rich heritage of storytelling, too many evangelicals have forfeited this vital skill. Tom Steffen's aim is to help readers recapture the most natural, universal, and effective means of evangelism-discipleship that exists—storytelling.
From Noah to Moses to King David, every story in the Bible points to a baby, the child upon whom everything will depend. A Bible like no other, this book invites children to discover for themselves that Jesus is at the center of God's great story for salvation. Full color.ADD TO CART

Do you feel like all is lost? Are you ready to give up? There IS still hope.
Dr. James Dobsons "tough love" principles have proven to be uniquely valuable and effective. Unlike most approaches to marriage crisis, the strategy in this groundbreaking classic does not require the willing cooperation of both spouses. Love Must Be Tough offers the guidance that gives you the best chance of rekindling romance, renewing your relationship, and drawing your partner back into your arms.

For nearly two decades, evangelical preacher Lucado has been writing about God's inexhaustible grace, and his books have been snapped up by readers hungry to know they are loved, accepted, forgiven and saved. In his latest book this message, though still present, has moved to the background. A Copernican revolution is in order, Lucado says: it is time to understand that life revolves around God, not ourselves. The God he describes is neither Santa Claus nor a kindly, reassuring grandpa. He is a God of glory and holiness, eternal and unchanging. "To seek God's glory is to pray, 'Thicken the air with your presence; make it misty with your majesty. Part heaven's drapes, and let your nature spill forth. God, show us God.' " Our role, once we have seen God's glory, is simply to reflect it. We do this by proclaiming his message, using our bodies the way he intended, trusting him in the midst of suffering and acknowledging him as the author of our success. Even our salvation "showcases God's mercy. It makes nothing of [our] effort but everything of his." Sterner generations of Christians memorized the answer to the first question in the Westminster Shorter Catechism: "Man's chief end is to glorify God and to enjoy him forever." Lucado brings this concept to life with his trademark breezy style, good humor, homey anecdotes and passion. His fans may be surprised by this new emphasis, but they will not be disappointed.

• BIBLICAL Perspective: What does Scripture say from Genesis through Revelation about Gods intention to reach all nations with His blessing?
• HISTORICAL Perspective: How did the Kingdom of God advance from Jerusalem to where we are today?
• STRATEGIC Perspective: What is God doing in our generation? How can each church and believer link with His plan?
• CULTURAL Perspective: How does cultural diversity connect with God's Kingdom?
• PARTNERSHIP Perspective: How does the global church partner together to increase effectiveness for the Kingdom?
PathLight is being used wherever God’s committed people gather. Ideal for Sunday-school classes, short-term teams, church-based training, or interdenominational courses, this thought-provoking material develops global vision in practical and world-changing ways. 135-pg paperback.
What if you only had one month to live? How would you make each day meaningful? How would you relate to others differently? What would you do to make the rest of your life really matter?
With eye-opening insights and soul-inspiring truths, One Month to Live will challenge you to embrace the life God has entrusted to you and you alone, and to live it out moment by moment with wholehearted authenticity, honesty, and integrity.
Each chapter overflows with inspiring quotations, colorful true stories, and questions for reflection. The four sections, which can be read over four weeks, help you examine the core areas inside you that long to be exercised and expressed: how you’re made to live passionately, love boldly, learn from your mistakes, and leave a legacy that endures for generations after you’re gone. Complete with uplifting action points, each of the thirty chapters–one per day in a life-changing month–offers you fresh strategies for overcoming habits that mire you in mediocrity.
Open yourself to the challenge of embracing your mortality and being empowered to live each day engaged in being fully alive.

In this rare, previously unpublished interview Henri Nouwen, one of the most deeply loved spiritual teachers of recent times, reflects on themes that were central to his life and thought.
Beloved records ? in both spoken and written form ? a treasured conversation that took place in the summer of 1992 at a retreat center in England. The CD enables one to listen to Nouwen??'s distinctive voice as he speaks about such things as transforming our loneliness, escaping the tyranny of busyness, and choosing to live in ways that, moment by moment, remind us of who we are ? the beloved of God.
The book shows this conversation to be studded with gems of spiritual wisdom that merit slow, contemplative reading. Including questions for reflection or discussion, Beloved is perfect for individual or group retreats or for personal listening and reading. Here is a depth of wisdom to turn to again and again.

It's difficult to imagine a harder first act to follow than The Kite Runner: a debut novel by an unknown writer about a country many readers knew little about that has gone on to have over four million copies in print worldwide. But when preview copies of Khaled Hosseini's second novel, A Thousand Splendid Suns, started circulating at Amazon.com, readers reacted with a unanimous enthusiasm that few of us could remember seeing before. As special as The Kite Runner was, those readers said, A Thousand Splendid Suns is more so, bringing Hosseini's compassionate storytelling and his sense of personal and national tragedy to a tale of two women that is weighted equally with despair and grave hope.ADD TO CART

Having worked as a youth pastor for a decade, I thought that this book was a good introduction to working with junior high or middle school students. There are not too many books on this subject on the market, so I can see it as being very helpful to those starting out working with this age group. Good information on developmental issues that would be helpful to teachers as well. The book takes a useful approach to spiritual formation that is appropriate to the age group. It also has some good things to say about utilizing junior high kids in leadership roles, an aspect of this ministry that is often neglected. Finally, there is pertinent information on brain-based research that will be helpful to leaders trying to understand how junior high kids think. Worth your time to read this!ADD TO CART
This book was originally published in 1979 and revised in 1983. Before Terri Schiavo, before assisted suicide laws, before Dr. Kevorkian, even before C. Everett Koop was Surgeon General of the U.S., he and the late Francis Schaeffer, a prominent theologian, were sounding a warning about the growing devaluation of human life and how it would lead to infanticide and euthanasia.

Become the leader people are proud to follow by opening yourself to the influences that develop character: Anduring relationships with friAnds, family, and God. Solidly based on Christian values, this practical, visionary, and hope-filled book guides readers through a step-by-step process for developing both personal character and the network of important relationships that enable character to win out, even in the face of setbacks, adversity, and temptations to take short cuts. Leadership is about character, the authors assert, and character weaves values like integrity, honesty, and selfless service into the fabric of our lives, organizations, and cultures.
The Ascent of a Leader is written for ordinary people-mothers, husbands, bosses, secretaries, pastors, teachers, and students-who want to develop extraordinary character, find and follow God's plan for their lives, and lead others where they need to go. We all have innate leadership potential. To maximize it, we must do much more than develop performance-based skills, the authors assert. We must consciously choose who and what we allow to influence us, find and develop our humility, and build Anduring relationships with colleagues, family, friAnds, and God. They offer engaging real-life examples to show how we can grow into our true potential as leaders and inspire us to "make a difference in the 21st century-in our families, our communities, our companies, our government, and even our world."
51-page spiral bound. Learn what two important findings in a short-term mission program are likely to help create long-term career missionaries. This 1995-99 study validated 1991 published findings (statistically significant increases in prayer, missions giving, missions education, etc.); and more importantly, uncovered two valuable new findings which demonstrate certain statistically significant correlations between short-term and long-term career missionary service.ADD TO CART
Christian spiritual practices are the subject of this abridgment of Foster's 1978 book. The inward disciplines are meditation, prayer, fasting, and study; the outward disciplines are simplicity, solitude, submission, and service; and the community disciplines are confession, worship, guidance, and celebration. With intellectual clarity on par with that of C.S. Lewis, Foster is a wonderful teacher who is accessible as a speaker and in touch with the aimlessness of the modern era. He's also a humble teacher whose personality takes a backseat to his ideas and sensibilities. For anyone turned off by the concept of discipline and religious authority, this conversational audio will open up wonderful possibilities for introducing loving structure into one's life. Just as a potter uses a "rib" to apply pressure and give shape to clay vessels spinning on a wheel, Brian Williams argues that God has used mentors from the time of ancient Israel to the modern church to prepare leaders for service to his people. This book provides a historical and theological foundation for mentoring, and invites pastors, supervisors, and seminarians to step into this rich heritage of pastoral formation by offering vignettes of these relationships in the lives and ministries of such diverse pastors as Gregory of Nazianzus, St. Augustine, Catherine of Siena, John Newton, Karl Barth, and Dietrich Bonhoeffer.
By combining the wisdom of the classical disciplines of spiritual direction and apprenticeship Williams offers us a model that addresses the four main concerns of these pastoral mentors: moral and personal formation, pastoral calling and imagination, theological reflection and deliberation, and practical pastoral skills. The book concludes with a number of tools, forms, and suggestions to help shape and guide this demanding but rewarding practice. THE POTTER'S RIB will challenge experienced pastors and seminary students alike to take seriously the role of mentoring in becoming the pastors they are called to be.

The Road for Lacey Rutledge begins with her first memory at two years old and maps the path she travels within a small town in Western North Carolina. Raised by her parents, grandparents and extended family, as was common in the 30s, her story is filled with colorful characters who unknowingly help establish the woman she becomes. Her Pappy is a man deeply devoted to the things of God and captures Lacey s complete affection, thus causing her to search for her own spiritual destiny. However, having that pure heart of a child, but faced with a world of prejudiced views, Lacey finds herself being singled out by a town full of preconceived ideas and religious bigotry, fighting for what is right and against those things that are wrong in the eyes of God. The Road takes you on her journey and leaves you wanting a deeper understanding of the significance of each character to Lacey, why some love her unconditionally while others hate her innocence, and a personal desire to obtain a relationship with God that can bring her kind of faith during our own trials, testing and conflicts.ADD TO CART
